Tokyo, Aug 29 (efe-epa).- The president of Ecuador will travel to Japan on Sep.3 on an official visit to deepen bilateral ties, the Japanese government announced on Wednesday.
This will be the first visit by an Ecuadorian leader to Japan in eight years.
Lenin Moreno, who will be accompanied by his wife, Rocio Gonzalez, will remain in the Asian country until Sep.8, the Japanese foreign ministry said.
“The Government of Japan sincerely welcomes the visit of President Moreno and his spouse and hopes that their visit will further deepen the friendly relations between Japan and the Republic of Ecuador, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2018,” the ministry said in a statement.
In a press conference, top government spokesperson Yoshihide Suga described Japan and Ecuador as friends with shared basic values on either side of the Pacific.
Moreno and Gonzalez are scheduled to meet Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko during the trip.
